What does it really threaten?

People in America give me the willies. They really do. This weeks beef is that age old drama about gay marriage. If you listen to the Republicans in the Senate you would think the world is going to hell in a handbasket over this. You got a guy up there on the Hill saying if this is okay then how long will it be till you can marry 3 people, knowing that is a totally different issue altogether. You have Senators claiming our very own sense of morality as a nation is at stake. Puh-lease. The only thing at stake is the bloody House.

The reason why this is silly is because it is based on the Bible. Not that the Bible is silly, but law in America cannot come from it. It just can't. We can take the Bible out of the argument because isn't legal to do this, as it would take away some peoples protection under the law. The law in this country has to fall outside of the Good Book. If it doesn't then everything our forefathers fought for is dead. I understand that in many peoples eyes marriage is a contract with God. I think that is wonderful and amazing. Everything that comes with it like shared health benefits and shared property are given by the government, and they are legally obligated to offer that all its citizens, no matter the gender. If being married was such a holy thing I shouldn't be able to marry someone, but I can. So can a judge. The Bible is one thing, but the law is something else and that is what has to guide this debate.

The argument against this cannot really be that it threaten the institution of marriage. Two people can be married in this country for no other reason than to get someone's money, receive health benefits or even to become a legal citizen. How can two men or two women who love each other wanting to make that a legally binding relationship come anywhere near as close to hurting the institution of marriage as those other reasons? If marriage is really at risk, why not ban divorce? There is so much more wrong with this institution, that including people that want it so bad cannot realistically harm it in any way.

I could go on about this for days, but I just wanted to be heard a little. There are so many other things on this country's plate that trying to forever take away someone's civil rights shouldn't be on it too.
